FAQ

Last-minute packing questions

Short answers to the things travellers ask us most, from cabin sizes to cleaning.

Can I take a backpack as a personal item?

Yes, if it fits the airline's under-seat limit. Ryanair's free item is 40 x 20 x 25 cm and easyJet's is 45 x 36 x 20 cm. Check your airline before you fly.

Is a backpack better than a suitcase for Europe?

For cobbles, stairs and trains, a backpack is easier to carry. For hotel stays with smooth pavements, a wheeled case can be more comfortable.

How do I measure my torso length?

Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the line of your hip bones. Match that number to the pack maker's size chart.

How heavy should a loaded backpack be?

A common guideline is about 10 to 20 percent of your body weight. Lower is better for long days.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

Water-resistant fabric sheds light rain. Waterproof construction uses sealed seams and covered zips. Most packs benefit from an inner liner in heavy rain.

What is a stowable harness?

A panel that zips over the straps and hip belt, so the pack can be checked or stowed without snagging.

Will my laptop fit in a backpack sleeve?

Check the stated sleeve size against your screen size. A 16 inch laptop needs a sleeve rated for 16 inches, not a 15 inch one.

Do I need a rain cover?

A cover helps in showers, but it can blow off and does not protect the back panel. A pack liner or dry bags are more reliable.

How do I clean a travel backpack?

Spot clean with mild soap and a soft brush, then air dry away from direct heat. Avoid washing machines and tumble dryers.

Do brands pay for your reviews?

No. No brand pays for placement or sees a verdict before publication.
